Clearly, that was not the case.

The storm was coming.

Hurricane Mother-In-Law was about to hit Washington DC, and he was helpless to stop it.

Unfortunately.

Chapter Thirteen

The Fort

Midnight

Early Tuesday

T o say that she was restless would be an understatement. Elizabeth was staring up at the ceiling for a good ninety minutes as she was tucked between Ethan and Callen. She simply couldn’t sleep.

There was too much on her mind, from Chris, who hadn’t made it home yet, to Addison and her nightmares, and even to her own issues.

Sleep was going to be elusive.

She.

Could.

Tell.

It looked like she’d sleep when she was dead—at this point.

While she’d been laying there, praying for her sanity, she was beginning to feel that guilt coming back. She was beginning to feel overwhelmed. Since getting her memories back, her world had been turned upside down on so many levels.

This was just one.

While she wanted to close her eyes and sleep, Elizabeth couldn’t make her brain shut down. If she closed her eyes now, she knew what it would entail.

Nightmares.

They would come.

Oh, she could bet money on it.

Her conscience was bothering her, and she needed to do something about it. It looked like she was getting up.

So, as she listened to the soft breathing from Ethan, not far away, and the zesty snoring of Callen from sleeping on his back, she began her escape.

Slowly, she slid out of bed and freed herself from the sheets that had been over her. Ethan moved off of her body, giving her an escape route.

As soon as she was free of hair, limbs, and bedding, she looked back to make sure both men were still out for the count.

They were.

Whew.

Thankfully, they were not light sleepers. Now, if Chris was here, that would have been impossible to escape.

Outside their room, Elizabeth closed their bedroom door and headed toward Cat and Addy’s room.

Inside, when she peeked, she found their kids all inside there. The boys were between the girls and the door and the girls were all around Addy.

Even their littlest ones were in there. Daniel was cuddled up with Christopher Anthony, and TJ was tucked into a corner, sucking on his thumb with his blanket.

Well, they were at peace, at least.

All was well on the home front.

Except with her.

She sighed.

Elizabeth knew what she needed, and oddly, that peace wasn’t going to be found here. She had to have a little meeting, and that meant leaving the house.

It was time.

She’d put it off all weekend, and it was time to meet with him.

This wouldn’t be the first time that she’d snuck out without anyone knowing.

Over the last year, she’d done it more than a few times. Since getting her memory back, she’d found the need to do it. It had been a hole in her, and she couldn’t pretend.

Would the men approve?

She wasn’t sure.

She fully expected their confusion and hurt that she didn’t just tell them, but sometimes, you had to keep secrets when they mattered to your soul.

This one did.

Going to the laundry room, she pulled on some clothes that she found in there, and then, she headed downstairs.
